Fine for Failure to Provide AccessA Scottish hotel has paid £5000 after failing to provide disabled access. Redstones Hotel in Lanarkshire has had to pay £3000 compensation and £2000 legal expenses after a disabed customer encountered a series of disasters at a family birthday celebration. Isaac Curran - a wheelchair user - was left "embarrassed and disappointed" when he attended a relative's 50th birthday party last year in the hotel's restaurant. The hotel assured Mr Curran's relative that hey had full wheelchair access in advance of the party. However, when he arrived Mr Curran couldn't get a disabled parking space in the car park, was unable to get in the front door of the hotel and had to be manhandled up five steps into the dining room and also into the gents toilet. Mr Curran decided to take court action after the hotel refused to answer his letters asking when they would make their facilities accessible. He contacted the DRC helpline and DRC Scotland supported his case.
